Company History
Founded in 1921, J&M Brown is building on its more than 90-year track record of delivering on its promise of excellence in electrical construction. During the early development of Greater Boston’s Route 128 industrial and technology belt, many of the prominent facilities on what later became America’s Technology Highway were powered by J&M Brown’s expertise, including Raytheon, Polaroid, and the Coca Cola Bottling Plant.
As the Boston skyline began taking shape from 1968 to 1973, J&M Brown constructed such iconic buildings as 28 State Street, 60 State Street, One Beacon and 100 Summer Street. Later, the company would provide electrical construction for 500 Boylston Street and 222 Berkeley.
From the mid-1970s to the mid-80s, in addition to major commercial projects in downtown Boston, the company also brightened Boston’s growing visitor market, with hotel projects that included the Hyatt Regency, Cambridge, the Back Bay Hilton, the Four Seasons and Cambridge Center Marriott.
J&M Brown’s construction highlights from the 1990s to recent years include many landmark projects – TD Garden sports arena, Harvard School of Dental Medicine Research and Education, Draper Laboratory – One Hampshire at Kendall Square, MIT Building W1 renovation, and the Art of the Americas Wing at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), to name just a few.
Today, J&M Brown is underway with some of the most dynamic construction and renovation projects in the region.
Over the years, the company’s expansion has evolved to meet the full service electrical contracting needs of our clients, and the marketplace. J&M Brown’s Fire Alarm Division has distinguished itself as a leader in the field – many of Boston’s historic facilities have called upon J&M Brown to provide comprehensive updating of their life safety systems. Our tel/data and security division, Spectrum Integrated Technologies, is recognized industry-wide for providing state-of-the-art communications and security systems in many of Boston’s most recognizable buildings. In 2012, J&M Brown’s Energy Division was launched and is providing energy audits and energy efficiency installations at facilities throughout Greater Boston.
