Jamaica Plain, MA – J&M Brown Company, Inc. (JMB), based in Jamaica Plain, MA, has completed the comprehensive, multi-phase electrical systems’ renovation at the historic Old South Church at 645 Boylston Street in Boston. The project scope, which coincided the complete upgrade of the building’s mechanical systems, entailed replacement of the church’s electrical, fire alarm, security, tel/data, HVAC, elevator, and sprinkler systems. JMB’s construction of a new electrical room and electrical distribution system were integral to the project.
Pre-construction planning was critical to the project, as J&M Brown teamed with general contractor Consigli Construction of Boston and electrical engineering firm Syska Hennessy Group of Cambridge to ensure the historic building’s structural integrity and interior finishes were not adversely impacted during construction. Project manager Steve and general foreman Tom Campbell headed the JMB project team, comprised of a field crew of 10 IBEW Local 103 electricians and technicians.
A highlight of the renovation was J&M Brown’s restoration of 18 historic chandeliers dating back to the turn of the century.
Spectrum Integrated Technologies, the low voltage division of J&M Brown, provided both tel/data and security system installations.
The historic renovation project was provided without interruption to ongoing church services and day care center activities. Work commenced in April 2014 and was completed on a six-month schedule in October 2014.
The Old South Church, a National Historic Landmark building, was constructed in 1875.

Cambridge, MA – J&M Brown Company, Inc., based in Jamaica Plain, MA, is underway with comprehensive electrical construction of Northpoint Twenty/20, the new 20-story luxury high-rise apartment tower at 20 Child Street in Cambridge. The NECA Boston contractor is handling core and shell electrical construction at the 400,000 square-foot building, which entails installation of the structure’s primary and emergency power, lighting and lighting control, fire alarm and security systems.
The project scope also includes J&M Brown’s electrical fit-out of Northpoint’s 355 residential units, fitness center, café, 9,000 square feet of office space, and five retail locations at street level.
J&M Brown is teaming with CBT Architects of Boston and general contractor John Moriarty & Associates of Winchester. Designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, Northpoint Tweny/20 is scheduled for completion in early 2015.
Tenant work that modernized existing space with occupancy sensors, poke-thrus and energy efficient lights. J & M Brown handled the electrical construction in addition to the A/V installation and card access expansion.

Energy-efficient lighting upgrade included replacing gymnasium light fixtures with 12 T5 HO high bay lamps with integral occupancy sensor controls. Value-engineering in field for new layout of circuitry.
